Western Window Systems will showcase its moving glass walls and windows in the new Dwell Home 2, a modern custom residence to be completed in October 2018 in Topanga Canyon, near Malibu.
The design of the home comes from the winner of Dwell’s Green Home competition, which called for a plan addressing a wide range of sustainability issues and an ongoing investigation into the organization of space. With the help of renowned LA-based architect Frank Escher, the custom home will be built to the highest green standards possible, relying on the latest in technology, design, carpentry, heating and cooling, windows and doors, and appliances.
Under construction on a Topanga Canyon hillside, the home’s massive plinth will be skewed to address views and topography. Speaking of views, the home will feature a 360-degree wraparound veranda for a complete indoor-outdoor living experience. An open living/dining/kitchen area will act as the central space, with two sleeping areas at opposite ends of the building. A graywater system and on-site wastewater treatment will be designed to reduce water use. And overhangs, a green roof and a combination of fixed and movable shading devices will control heat gain.
Western Windows Systems sliding glass doors and windows will frame the home’s magnificent views and provide a seamless transition from the indoors to the outside.
According to Dwell, Escher treats hillside residences as poetic responses to difficult sites.
